Restoring and rebuilding lives and communities: shining a light into the darkness.
Pontiac, Mich.-based Hope Against Trafficking recently held an open house for its fourth home to thank sponsors, volunteers and supporters who helped restore the home for the courageous women in Hope’s residential program.
“Thanks to Power Home Remodeling’s generosity and their committed volunteers, we transformed this space into a beautiful home,” said Michele Isbister, executive director, Hope Against Trafficking. “Hope’s long-term goal is to purchase and renovate an apartment building to provide hope and create 75 more beds for survivors, shining a light into the darkness.
“We also need industry leaders and board members to help steer Hope’s future growth strategy, lead fundraising efforts and our grant-writing efforts, as well as social media ambassadors to spread awareness and educate,” said Isbister.
Hope buys and restores homes to provide long-term, safe housing for survivors of human trafficking. Power Home Remodeling provided a grant to help transform the house into a safe space for survivors to recover and restore their lives. Ian Johnson, remodeling consultant at Power Home Remodeling shared about Power’s Giving Circle. Each office can award a $100,000 grant and develop a long-term partnership with a nonprofit of its choosing.
“We chose Hope Against Trafficking since they make a tremendous impact on the community and had a clear vision and very tangible ways for us to be involved. We’ve accomplished clear goals with our volunteers,” said Johnson. “It’s a seamless partnership. Hope has also provided advocacy training to our team to raise awareness and provide tools for community prevention and intervention.”
Hope’s four pillars are the foundation of Hope’s work with the most vulnerable in society. They lead survivors to safety, stability, and independence – the foundation of real transformation.
1 - Safe Housing; A place where she is believed and protected.
2 - Comprehensive Program; Support for her mind, her heart, and her identity.
3 - Social Enterprise; A space where confidence and skills grow.
4 - Education and Awareness; A commitment to protect the next generation.
Housing: “For every 100 survivors, only one safe house bed is currently available across the U.S. Human trafficking happens in every zip code in Michigan and the United States, not just in foreign countries. Last year 506 new survivors were identified in Michigan, according to the National Human Trafficking Hotline and the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission,” said Isbister.
“Hope not only restores and rehabilitates survivors; we are restoring and rehabilitating a community. This Power Home Remodeling project opened up four beds for survivors and will help Hope expand space for our Social Enterprise,” said Isbister.
Program: Only a few holistic programs exist in Michigan that meet the physical, mental, spiritual, education and financial needs of adult female survivors. Hope is the largest and most comprehensive program that helps survivors recover, restore and rebuild their lives.
Social Enterprise: Thriving beyond survival requires dedicated coaching in life and job skills to prepare and empower residents for long-term success. Hope’s social enterprise provides survivors with valuable job skills, income-generating opportunities and self-confidence.
Education: Modern day slavery is one of the few issues our society can stop. Hope’s outreach events build awareness and prevention through community education. Hope’s long-term goal is to reach all of Michigan’s 1.7 million K-12 school children and their educators with Hope’s annual Child Safety Matters curriculum so they can learn how to be safe, both on and offline.
